Conde Nast to Close Gourmet Magazine
Holy god, it's the end of an era. The always extravagant Conde Nast has decided to call it quits on Gourmet - their upscale food publication that's been reporting on eats since 1940. Both Bon Appetit and Gourmet were eyed for the deathblow, but Gourmet ended up getting it on the neck: a surprise, as editor Ruth Reichl isn't exactly a nobody in the foodie universe. I always found Gourmet rather stodgy, but it's a genuine piece of American culinary history: it's a shame that we will lose it.

Apparantly home-made seven layer bars and blueberry muffins are the true enemies of America's youth - or at least that's NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg thinks, after outlawing school bake sales. Teams, clubs, and other student run events are going to have to find less delicious ways to make money.
My opinion? Total, unadulterated idiocy. An occasional three dollar muffin or brownie is not going to change the collective BMI of New York City's youth - but the money those deadly baked goods bring in will make a huge difference for kids in student organizations. Another irony: healthy food is now required to be stocked in all the district's vending machines. Sounds nice on paper - but what do you think is healthier? A home-made baked good, or a corn syrup enhanced slab o' low fat potato by Lays? What's better for the soul? The answer is obvious. We're not going to solve America's obesity problem with strident and stupid mass bans. Lifestyle change does not come that easy, and it shouldn't come at the expense of an occasional cupcake for a good cause.

What in the name of God does Blue Bunny want us to do to our dinners? Apparantly, use Cherry Chocolate Ice Cream to make a sauce for roasted duck, or whip up a filet of sole crowned with a sauce made from Bomb Pops. Seriously.

Yo have you BEEN to a bake sale lately? I haven't seen one with genuine home made goods in almost 20 years. Good riddance; I hope they are banned from the earth and perhaps jettisoned into space.
You raise very good points, I agree. I even use Martha Stewart Every Day Food more than those for weekday meals – so good! I rarely buy all of those magazines. Publications also needed to get into the online game more, especially robust, beautifully designed online password-protected content for subscribers.
I made so much recipes with the help of Gourmet it just like my friend and always help me... but now i feel so lonely... I'll miss Gourmet..
